Service Record:   Enrolled in Co. H 9 Jan 1862 by Cpt. McRae at Statesville, NC. Admitted for pneumonia at CSA Gen Hosp, Charlottsville on 19 Jan 1863 and RTD 27 Mar 1863; taken POW at Gettysburg on 1 Jul 1863 and sent to Fort Delaware on 6 Jul 1863; transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 18 Oct 1863. Transferred to federal service after taking oath (he was 31) out west on 29 Jan 1864 and assigned as Cook in 1865 after the war; Duty at Ft. Rice Oct ’65; Posted at Ft. Leavenworth KS in Nov. 1865 and mustered out there; became Postmaster at Horse Creek Post Office, Dwelling #666, upon returning home.

Note:  William Greer left a wife and 7 small children at home when he was conscripted into the Army. He fought in the following battles with the 23rd NC Infantry:

Mechanicsville – June 26, 1862
Cold Harbor (Gaines Mill) – June 27, 1862
Malvern Hill – July 1, 1862
South Mountain – September 14, 1862

Chancellorsville – May 2 – 4, 1863
Gettysburg – July 1 – 3, 1863

Soldier Info:  Born in Johnson City, TN in 1833; Died at Horse Creek, Ashe Co., NC in 1897
