G on 17 Apr 1861; the 4th VA infantry was at Bull Run and fought in the Shenandoah Valley in Spring and Summer of 1862; he was detailed as a teamster for the regiment for a while in late 1862; captured on 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania C.H.; went through Belle Plains to Pt. Lookout, MD on 18 May 1864; then transferred to Elmira NY prison on 30 July 1864 and finally released on 30 June 1865
