C on 6 Aug 1863; captured near Lithonia, GA on 22 Aug 1864; POW and sent thru Louisville, KY en route to Camp Chase, OH on 2 Sep 1864; There was a smallpox epidemic resulting in many deaths in late 1864 and early 1865; His record states he died of “diarrhea acute”, but likely secondary to dysentery.  His letter to his wife (12 Nov 1864) states he was vaccinated for small “pocks” at the prison.camp chase letter of Eli Chapman
