Age at Enlistment: 14

Length of Service: 1863-1864

State:  Virginia

Rank:  Pvt

Unit:    63rd VA Infantry Regiment

Service Record:  Enlisted in Co. G at age 14 in Saltville, VA on 29 Apr 1863; Listed as deserted June 1863, but returned to duty after the summer crop on 6 Oct 1863; He was mustered out on 11 Dec 1863 at Dalton, GA, but likely was sent home or deserted again. Captured by Union soldiers abt Jan 1864 and doesn’t say he was sent to prison, so yankees may have released him to go home; NFR

Note: He is listed at 5 ft 10 in tall, fair complexion and blue eyes. Because he was fairly tall, he may have passed for a 17 yr old, so it’s likely he lied about his age to enlist and was discovered to be too young and or simply got homesick and went home, but was captured by Union troops in Jan 1864.
